TheSuccesorshipof Prophethood

The institution of spiritual and administrative leadership after prophethood. The re-establishment of divinely appointed leadership(Khilafat)

After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), the institution of khilafat - or successorship - was instituted to serve as Muslims’ spiritual and administrative head and spread Islam. An individual divinely appointed to this office is referred to as a khalifa or caliph. In accordance with a prophecy of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), following the passing of Ali, khilafat was replaced with various kingships and periods of despotic rule.
